About this piece
back to topAn oil on canvas painting of Donatello’s Saint George of England.
A side profile of Donatello’s marble sculpture of Saint George. The sculpture stands amongst fourteen others commissioned to decorate the external niches of the Orsanmichele church in Florence. Today the statue is housed inside the Bargello Museum.
The monochrome colours allow for a deep photographic quality, further enhanced by the layered gilt frame. Skilfully painted by an unknown artist.
Painted in the late 19th century, seemingly before the sculptures nose was broken in 1858, and moved to the safety of the museum before being replaced with a bronze.
