This wonderful vista is signed R. Muller on the front. The reverse has the note ‘Via Appia,‘ and is thought to be the ruins of the so-called “Palazzo Maggiore.”
The Great Palace was a vast, 1st-century AD complex, built by Emperor Domitian on Rome’s Palatine Hill.
Captured in the late 1800s, this calming scene shows the rolling hills and mountains in the distance that are not obscured by modern developments.
Presented in a gilt frame with complementary mount, the painting has a broad colourway and pleasing proportions, reminiscent of a time of wonder and discovery.
