About this piece
back to topA 19th century continental mahogany green man grotesque wood carving.
This mythical figure is skilfully carved in high relief from a deeply coloured mahogany. The head has hair resembling foliage and acanthus leaves. The face is expressive and aged with an air of wisdom. The green man symbolizes nature, rebirth, and the cycle of life. Below the face, a leaf rolls around a branch, resembling the talons of a perched owl.
Reclaimed from a cabinet showcased in the second Swiss national exhibition of 1896 in Geneva. It was at this event that the automobile was introduced to Switzerland for the first time!
One of three we have available, all fitted with a hanger ready to display.
