This 18th century marble carving was crafted circa 1720. The original marble relief panel titled Victory of Sacred Love over Profane Love was crafted by Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy in the early 17th century.
Duquesnoy described the sculpture as “Divine Love striking down Profane Love, trampling him underfoot and silencing him by covering his mouth with a hand, while another youth holds aloft the laurel wreath—the prize for an immortal victory.”
This version is after the later Antonio Raggi sculpture inspired by this work. It is a reinterpretation of the myth of brothers Eros and Anteros, symbolising the balance of love.
