About this piece

A lifesize 20th century neoclassical style plaster bust of Greek and Roman God, Apollo.

This freestanding bust is made from a plaster-composite material and is instantly recognisable as the head of the full body statue ‘The Apollo Belvedere’, which sees Apollo in a classical stance having just released an arrow from a bow.

The original statue – which has been lost for many centuries – is thought to have been depicted in bronze and created by 4th century BC sculptor, Leochares. A later reproduction in marble resides in the Vatican Museums, Rome, and has been the subject of further casts throughout history.

Apollo is an iconic figure of Greek and Roman mythology. He is considered the most loved of all Gods, associated with music, prophecy, healing and poetry – among other themes.
