About this piece

A very large late 16th/early 17th century oak carving; one of two similar beautifully handcarved panels we are selling featuring depictions from the Last Supper.

Ornate and finely crafted, the hand-carving on this panel is of excellent quality, showcasing the skill of its maker. Jesus can be seen at the centre of the piece with his palms together in prayer, his twelve disciples around him, standing each with staff in hand before a great table. Angels are carved below and above to each corner between great swags of drapery, all framed by an egg and dart border.

Completing the piece is a wax finish that accentuates the patina of the wood, giving it a warm, honey-toned colour that brings the carvings to life. It is fitted with a wire to the reverse ready for hanging on an interior wall.
