This decorative wall art piece is carved in light relief, telling the story of the martyrdom of a religious figure. The central figure with halo and head bowed, his mitre on the ground before him, kneels with palms together in prayer before a soldier with sword raised, surrounded by soldiers in armour and on horseback. The carved panel could depict the story of Saint Paul, also known as Paul the Apostle, who was martyred by beheading.
Dating back to circa 1750, this antique carving is a stunning example of 18th century craftsmanship, the piece complemented by its warm walnut wood colour. The integrated frame makes it perfect for decorative display in an interior, the reverse fitted with a wall hook ready for hanging.
