This highly detailed plaster bust sculpted by Giovanni Domenico Giannelli was crafted in the early 19th century. Finished in a deep black finish to resemble black basalt versions by Wedgewood.
Virgil is depicted with a laurel wreath, bestowed on highly regarded members of Roman society. The bust has rich level of detail, with the subject draped in a complex tunic and a flowing hairstyle.
Signed on the reverse and dated to 1802, the bust stands 45cm tall on a 14cm x 11cm socle. Also inscribed is ’33 Cock Lane’, where Gianelli used to exhibit his works.
Giovanni Domenico Giannelli (1775-1841)
Giovanni Domenico Giannelli (1775-1841) was a student in the Copenhagen Academy, winning gold and silver medals in 1797 and 1799. In 1801 he applied for permission to go to England. Gianelli exhibited at the Royal Academy 1809-20, also from 33 Cock Lane, Snow Hill. Today a selection of his sought after works are held in the V&A and the National Portrait Gallery.
