Bearing the mark of the Chiurazzi foundry, and raised on a Breccia marble base, this high quality bronze of Ajax dates back to circa 1890.
The Chiurazzi foundries were established by Gennaro Chiurazzi senior. An apprentice of Pietro Masulli, who first copied ancient works of art, drawing his inspiration from Cellini’s method of making wax and multi-part molds of antique sculptures.
Ajax the great is presented with long curly hair flowing into a matching beard. The distinct peaked helmet is adorned with eagles, and his exposed chest is lines with the edges of a robe. Ajax was an important figure in the Trojan War, and is portrayed as a great warrior in Homer’s Iliad.
