A fossil of Saint-Jacques pecten scallop shells.

This naturally formed specimen known as a plaque or cluster of extinct fossilised giant scallop shells (Gigantopecten restitutensis). These bivalve mollusks belong to the family Pectinidae which survive today as scallops.

Found today in ancient marine sedimentary layers, they are sourced from Miocene-era deposits which are around 16 to 20 million years old, such as the Lacoste Quarry in Vaucluse, Southern France.

This natural sculpture is the perfect cabinet of curiosities piece. The fan shaped shells are layered together in a limestone block which has been cut flush along the base to make a free standing almost statutory display.
