About this piece

This neoclassical plaster bust of Ares is made in plaster and depicts the iconic marble statue by Alkamenes in 5th Century BC.

Ares is the Greek god of war, son of Zeus and Hera. Cast with a sweeping plume, arching over a sphinx, perched a top a finely detailed helmet of rich palmettes, winged griffons and dogs. Cast in the early 20th century, this plaster bust is skilfully replicated in the style of Brucciani & Co.

The original sculpture is lost, however a Roman copy is currently housed at the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
