About this piece
back to topA large-scale fossilised limestone ammonite (130+ million years old), presented on one of our large, museum quality, painted plaster display plinths. Ex. private collection of Gordon Walkden.
Sourced from Worth Quarry, Swanage, this impressive ammonite fossil has a distinctive coiled shape with subtle ridges indicative of what once were the septa (walls) between its inner chambers. Unlike other ammonites which have a lustrous, iridescent finish, this fossilised ammonite has an organic, stone-like texture with a light neutral colour reminiscent of natural limestone.
Preserved over millions of years, this superb ammonite a striking interior piece, perfect for a display or collector’s cabinet.
Provenance
From the fascinating collection of Gordon Walkden (1944-2022), emeritus Professor of Geology at Aberdeen University. Affectionally known as Aberdeen’s answer to Indiana Jones, Walkden contributed enormously to research through his papers and talks on British marbles, minerals and fossils. Highly respected in his field, Walkden was active throughout his retirement, invited to Windsor Castle to identify marbles used in the Albert Memorial Chapel. This is just one of various specimens we are selling originally from his outstanding collection.
