About this piece

A very large mid-17th century Italian school oil profile portrait of a philosopher, painted on a rectangular canvas and mounted in a painted and gilded antique frame.

Reminiscent of the works of great baroque painters such as Guido Reni (Italian, 1575-1642) and Simon Vouet (French, 1590-1649), this oil painting captures the profile of an old, bearded philosopher or scholar wearing neoclassical drapery across his shoulder with his gaze turned round and upwards as if observing in awe.

Skilfully painted to create a sense of depth and expression, this antique oil painting’s earthy colours are accentuated by a painted and gilded wooden frame. You can just imagine it at the centre of a main wall in a period property, bringing interest and grandeur to a dining room, hallway or study.
