A set of identical 4 and ¼ inch mid 19th century glazed encaustic tiles by W. Godwin of Lugwardine, Hereford (stamped).

Excellent examples of W. Godwin works, these reclaimed English tiles are in good condition for their age, with light wear that only adds to their historic beauty. Each is an encaustic tile, the foliate quatrefoil pattens made using contrasting red and buff tones, still clear and distinctive to this very day and making excellent collector’s items.

Godwin Tiles

William Godwin began manufacturing quarry tiles, bricks and drainpipes at his factory in Lugwardine, Herefordshire in 1851. In later years, William went into partnership with his son and traded as ‘Godwin & Co’, a name that would become reputable until long after William’s death in 1925.
