back to topA large scale early 18th century Italian neoclassical white marble bust of Diana, circa 1720-1730.
Considered to be of Florentine origin, this impressive marble bust is believed to depict Diana (the Greek Artemis), Roman Goddess of the wildlife and the hunt. While weathered, the sculptural details of the bust are in good condition, features of the face still intact and her hair swept back. Markings on the back suggest that there was originally a bun to the back of her head which may have been intentionally not carved or removed so that she sits more comfortably into a recess.
There is also another bust of Diana’s twin brother – Apollo – pictured, details for which can be found under Stock No. 38267.
Both were discovered in a garden in Kent and were likely brought to Britain much earlier during the Grand Tour era by a wealthy traveller as mementos of European explorations.
