Diana
This bust is a depiction of Diana, Roman goddess of wild animals and the hunt, known in Greek mythology as Artemis.
Although, in Roman mythology, she was originally an indigenous woodland goddess, Diana identified with her Greek counterpart, who has ties to the moon and daylight.
The most famous place of worship for the goddess was the grove of Diana Nemorensis, meaning ‘Diana of the Wood’, located near Rome.
A well known over life-size sculpture of the Roman goddess named ‘The Diana of Versailles or Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt’, is currently located in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. It depicts her in the middle of a hunt holding a deer.
This white statuary marble bust is a different depiction of this impressive goddess, allowing for a closer look at her more finer details, perhaps ignored in her more well known statue.
