About this piece
back to topAn antique Italian carved marble sculpture of Ariadne and the Panther circa 1860, signed indistinctly, modelled after the antique by Johann Heinrich von Dannecker (1758-1841). Elegantly made, it depicts Princess of Greek Mythology, Ariadne, seated in a relaxed reclining position on a panther. She is nude, swathed partly in drapery and holds a bunch of grapes in her left hand – a nod to her husband Dionysus, God of Wine.
Believed to express the idea of ‘wildness tamed by beauty’, the antique statue on which this depiction is based is regarded as one of Johann Heinrich von Dannecker’s masterpieces. It is located in the Liebeighaus Museum in Frankfurt, Germany. Another depiction inspired by Dannecker is made in porcelain by Minton & Co. and forms part of the Royal Collection.
