About this piece
back to topA set of nine reclaimed encaustic W.Godwin tiles.
Dating from the mid 19th century, these reclaimed encaustic tiles were produced in Lugwardine, Herefordshire. They are of a neo-medieval style, made in buff and red terracotta colours, with a pleasing circular repeating pattern with fleur de lis in the centre.
Together these 4-inch tiles create a striking set for a statement splashback or decorative panel in an interior, supplied loose for arrangement in any formation.
If more coverage is required, we have three more sets of nine under SKUs 37580, 37581 & 37582.
Godwin Tiles
Though William Godwin began manufacturing quarry tiles, bricks and drainpipes at his factory in Lugwardine, Herefordshire in 1851, it wasn’t until 1852 that the firm began making encaustic floor tiles. Based on medieval prototypes, the tiles proved extremely popular and the business opened a second factory at Withington in 1863. In later years, William went into partnership with his son and traded as ‘Godwin & Co’, a name that would become reputable until long after William’s death in 1925.
