About this piece
back to topA 19th century stained glass panel depicting the martyrdom of a saint.
This highly detailed scene is crafted with fine leadwork and vivid, colourful glass. The panel is split into two scenes with details painted over the glass.
The top panel shows a winged angel with open, welcoming arms. The wings are a mix of reds and greens, painted over with delicate feathers.
Below shows a saint, likely the protomartyr Saint Stephen. Before his execution, he looked up and experienced a heavenly vision. Breaking through the clouds was the hand of God ready to welcome him into heaven.
This panel is one of a series of seven that we have available by the same unknown artist, but reclaimed from the same location.
