About this piece

A 19th century Tudor style English oak fire surround.

This English oak fire surround is profusely carved with lions, foliage and draping fabrics. Hand carved by skilled Victorian craftsmen circa 1880.

The jambs are carved in high relief, with rolling acanthus leaves over layered scales that resemble armour. Lions dress each corner with rich fabrics draping from their open jaws.

The centre of the frieze bares the motto ‘Credo’ Latin for ‘I Believe.’ Above, the mantel is supported by a carved shelf dressed with jewels, fabrics and foliage carved in great detail.
