A 19th century large scale Jacobean revival fire surround with 16th century elements.

A highly unusual panelled fire surround featuring four full height barleycorn twist columns topped with Corinthian capitals, with each column ascending in an opposing direction.

Symmetrical panelling makes up the jambs with geometric floral designs throughout. The frieze is centred with a mermaid, resembling a figurehead from an ancient ship thought to calm the seas and bring good fortune.

The mantel above is supported by the columns and has a repeating pattern of drapery finishing the front edge. Thought to have been assembled in the 19th century from parts salvaged as early as the 16th century.
