About this piece
back to topA 19th century ink on paper drawing of the Convento della Trinità della Cava located in Campania, Italy.
Dating to the 19th century, the highly detailed drawing is on an exceptionally fine paper. In the foreground, two riders in noble attire are led through the pathway before the sprawling 11th century structure.
The abbey is viewed from the rear, with the tower fading into the distance around the curvature of the road.
The Convento della Trinità della Cava has been home to an ancient archive since 1025. In the late 19th century a college was opened within the Abbey which developed into a scientific school and an elementary school.
Although the artist is unknown, the undeveloped infrastructure around the building would allude to the scene being captured when horses were the principal mode of transport.
