19th Century Hand Carved Limestone Pinnacle Depicting The Pelican In Her Piety

A 19th century hand carved limestone pinnacle depicting the pelican in her piety.

This exceptionally carved English limestone obelisk dates to circa 1860. Constructed in four sections, the structure stars with an octagonal design resembling a crown.

The base has a rope twist banding with each face replicating a diamond design. Above, deeply carved circular designed are centred with a trio of spheres that resemble a clover leaf.

The largest section sits atop the octagonal base, carved in high relief with three bands of worn acanthus leaves under hoods. The spire widens to receive another octagonal stone with foliage spilling over the sides.

The final stone is a puncture carved nest of thorns housing a three chicks with their mother. The scene is known as the Pelican in her piety.

The symbolism is relatable beyond its religious connotations, and makes for a striking garden centrepiece.
