About this piece

A 19th century English neoclassical fire surround. Hand made by highly skilled English craftsmen circa 1890, this profusely carved walnut fire surround is presented in a waxed finish.

Blending Georgian, Victorian and Neoclassical styles, almost every part of this piece has a unique detail to discover. Stepped footblocks angle inwards to frame the opening, a scalloped design has symmetrical carvings with flowers in between.

The outer jambs have dripping flowers carved in high relief topped with a bow over an usual textured background. Above, highly detailed urns continue the neoclassical theme.

The frieze, dressed with three larger flowers leads to a dental moulding, topped with egg and dart moulding. Hidden within are small floral embellishments, shadowed by the stepped mantel.

A stunning example of 19th century craftsmanship that would make a striking centrepiece.
