19th Century 5-inch Medieval Style Encaustic Tile by Godwin

A 19^th century 5-inch medieval style encaustic tile by English makers Godwin of Lugwardine; one of 5 similar we have available.

Dating to circa 1870, this antique tile features a heraldic coat of arms design in deep red/brown and yellow colours. It bears a central shield detailed with a chevron and traverse bars between foliage leaves and a chilli plant.

An example of this exact Godwin tile design can be found in London’s V&A Museum, making this one an excellent collector’s piece.

Godwin Tiles

William Godwin began manufacturing encaustic tiles, bricks and drainpipes at his factory in Lugwardine, Herefordshire in 1851. In later years, William went into partnership with his son and traded as ‘Godwin & Co’, a name that would become reputable until long after William’s death in 1925.
