About this piece
back to topDating from the late 19th century, this Victorian antique fire grate is decoratively made using a range of techniques. While the back is cast in iron – as is typical of many antique fire baskets – the front is finely worked in wrought iron, heated and shaped at the hand of a talented 19th century blacksmith. This creates an unusual and unique design with defined scrolls and twists. To one side, there is a beautifully formed, tapering swirl, perhaps once used as a fireside candle holder. To the other, a tall scroll with a small hook. Whatever its use, this Victorian fire grate was certainly designed with both style and practicality in mind. It is finished in a smart black graphite polish.
