A beautifully preserved pair of George III coade stone urn finials marked ‘Coade Lambeth 1794’. The design for these urns appears in Coade’s 1778 trade catalogue under No. 94 (plate marked No. 2 in the Sir John Soane museum copy of the catalogue). Dating from the late 18th century, these spectacular fluted urns are each stamped with maker and date; one is worn.

Identical finials can be found on Eleanor Coade’s house in Belmont, Lyme Regis, Dorset. Coade Stone has a fascinating history, one which we have written about in depth in our blog dedicated to the Makers and Creators of British architectural history!

A pair of urn finials of identical design were sold at Christie’s on 27 September 2004 under Lot 278 (£35,850).
