About this piece

Four intricately detailed and hand-coloured 18th century engravings depicting the fountains of Palace of Versailles, France by British engraver, Benjamin Cole (1697-1783).

Fitted into glazed frames, these prints are taken from the book ‘Views of the several parts of the Palace, or Castle of Versailles’ which states that each was “drawn on the spot, by order, and with the approbation of the French King. Engraved in the year 1725”.

Of the 55 fountains at the palace, these 18th century engravings capture four: The Fountain of Enceladus, The Fountain of the Obelisk, The Fountain of Saturn and The Fountain of Bacchus; all of which are still in existence to this very day.

Cole captures the fountains in intricate detail, the hand-colouring bringing these engraving prints to life. They will make a beautiful set for architectural interest in a reception room, study or office, displayed as a set or individually if desired.
