About this piece
back to topA superb collection of 10 antique buff terracotta English statues depicting notable historical figures possibly by Blanchard. Included in the collection is Dante, 14th century Italian poet; Francis Drake, 16th century explorer; John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement and various unknown renaissance figures including a scholar, a woman, an artist, a medieval writer and a soldier. We are also selling a smaller group of 3 similar figures.
Antiques of English history, these statues date from circa 1880. Each is exquisitely detailed and has a beautiful buff terracotta colour that makes for a striking statement piece in any garden or interior.
These statues are identical to some of those that once resided in the Turkish Baths of London’s Imperial Hotel on Russell Square. The hotel was designed by architect Charles Fitzroy Doll (1850-1929) and demolished in 1966. To this day, the statues still reside on the site of the once hotel, lining the entrance to the underground car-park.
