About this piece
back to topThis reclaimed armillary sundial is a handsome focal point for a walled garden or courtyard. The sundial features a steel garden armillary sphere dating from the late 20th century above an early 20th century limestone pedestal. This is intricately decorated in neoclassical style with a composite style capital and swags to the base. It is a beautiful addition to a country garden where it might be situated among flowerbeds or at the centre of a large courtyard.
Garden Armillary Sphere on Pedestal
As opposed to the classic flat sundial, an armillary sundial is characterised by its spherical shape, often referred to as an armillary sphere. Invented by the ancient Greeks, this open spherical framework consists of a number of interlocking metal rings that showcase how they believe the universe worked, with the earth at the centre and the stars moving around it.
