Chinoiserie, from the French ‘Chinois’ meaning Chinese, was a style inspired by art and design from China, Japan and other Asian countries during the 18th century. It relied largely on craftsmanship and style rather than accurate portrayals of oriental motifs, the style most popular in Britain between 1750 and 1765.
