About this piece
back to topA large and very rare antique fireplace circa 1900, beautifully handpainted in black with golden chinoiserie figures, buildings and embellishments.
Certain to make an impression in any setting, this chinoiserie fire surround features the addition of a decorative shaped shelf to the top, echoing the sweeping rooftops handpainted in the large frieze canvas below.
Chinoiserie, from the French ‘Chinois’ meaning Chinese, was a style inspired by art and design from China, Japan and other Asian countries during the 18th century. It relied largely on craftsmanship and style rather than accurate portrayals of oriental motifs, the style most popular in Britain between 1750 and 1765.
