About this piece
back to topThis pair of late 18th century / early 19th century black marble pedestal columns are a striking feature for an interior. Standing at 120cm tall, they can be used as a stand to display decorative items such as vases or figurines or used alone in architectural alcoves, either side of a doorway or staircase to instil an interior with classical symmetry. Having stood the test of time for more than 200 years, each pedestal column is in good condition, only minor chips and light surface scratches revealing their age.
Kilkenny Marble
These antique marble pedestals are made from Kilkenny marble. Recognisable by its fine grain and very dark colour, its name is derived from its origin: Kilkenny in the southeast of Ireland. Often referred to as ‘The Marble City’, the medieval town of Kilkenny has supplied their signature black marble to the world since the 17th century. In fact, the footpaths of the city streets were once paved in Kilkenny marble flagstones!
