Borghese Gladiator

This carved walnut depiction is after the antique by Vincenzo Gemito.

The original marble sculpture of the Borghese gladiator was found in the early 1600s, in Nettuna, Rome, among the ruins of a seaside palace belonging to Emperor Nero on the site of the ancient Antium.

It is believed to represent Achilles fighting with the mounted Amazon.

The sculpture was later added to the Borghese collection, at the Villa Borghese, Italy, where it stood in a dedicated room.

In 1807, the sculpture was taken to Paris when the Borghese collection was acquired for the Louvre, where it now resides.
