Taken from the renowned series of ‘Twelve famous Greek and Roman men’ by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). The wider collection includes engravings of Socrates, Plato, Hippocrates, Nero, Cicero and Brutus.
To the left, Seneca the younger, a stoic philosopher of ancient Rome. Engraved by Lucas Vorsterman the Elder, who partnered with Rubens in the early 17th century.
To the right, Julius Caesar, the dictator of the Roman Republic from 49 BC – 44 BC. Engraved by Boetius à Bolswert, a master of his craft who collaborated with Abraham Bloemaert.
Both prints are identical to those held in the British Museum.
