This charming set of five bronzes show a group of swimmers in varying poses. Crafted in 1956, each figure is finely detailed, projecting from the bases which imitate water.
The casting shows exceptional attention to detail, with poses reminiscent of works by Rodin, Camille Claudel or his contemporary John w. Mills.
Widely celebrated, Scarfe has works held by the V&A and other prestigious British galleries.
Most interestingly, this work is the only known bronze of the artist better known for his industrial works and murals making it an exceptional rarity.
Laurence Scarfe (1914-1993)
Born in Idle, Yorkshire, Scarfe attended Shipley School of art before moving to London.
Attending the Royal college of Art from 1933-1937, Scarfe worked in several disciplines including illustration, poster and wallpaper design, fine art, ceramics and mural painting for which he is best known.
