About this piece
back to topThis unusual large scale Victorian style painted fireplace once resided in a large country property in the scenic village of Sonning, near Reading. Dating from the late 19th century, this decorative design is hand carved with masks of the Green Man – a symbol of myth and legend – to each of the jambs above garlands of foliage and berries, making for a beautiful and intricate focal point in the reading room or reception room of a heritage home.
It is made in a combination of oak and pine, currently applied with an old paint finish. Various carved motifs including egg and dart details to the mantel and frieze accentuate the pronounced shape of the shelf, bringing a sense of grandeur and prestige to any setting.
