About this piece
back to topA large-scale Jurassic ammonite fossil from Yarborough or Crosby Warren, Lincolnshire. Ex. private collection of Gordon Walkden.
Dating from the Jurassic period (145 million years ago), this large ammonite fossil has a deep, burnished brown colour with a distinctly coiled shape, which is particularly pronounced at the centre. Look closely and you’ll observe highlights of feathered jigsaw-like texture to the outer coil, formed by compression over millions of years.
Presented on one of our exclusive large painted plaster display plinths, this outstanding ammonite an impressive interior piece, perfect for a display or collector’s cabinet.
Provenance
From the fascinating collection of Gordon Walkden (1944-2022), emeritus Professor of Geology at Aberdeen University. Affectionally known as Aberdeen’s answer to Indiana Jones, Walkden contributed enormously to research through his papers and talks on British marbles, minerals and fossils. Highly respected in his field, Walkden was active throughout his retirement, invited to Windsor Castle to identify marbles used in the Albert Memorial Chapel. This is just one of various specimens we are selling originally from his outstanding collection.
