About this piece
back to topA large and innovative antique Victorian style oak fireplace dating from the late 19th century. Not only desirable for its handsome patina and beautifully carved details, this antique fire surround features hidden storage compartments to each jamb.
Inside, the compartments contain two shelves – perfect for housing fireplace essentials and other items out of sight – and each have an original key. From the front, these compartments are barely recognisable to the eye, the fireplace cleverly designed to conceal the compartments from view.
Aside from its creative and practical use of storage, this fireplace is a stunning chimneypiece for any property with its highly decorative, thick-set jambs, ornately carved with foliage panels and column-like ionic capitals, as well as its large frieze, centring simply around a moulded diamond.
