back to topA pair of Jean Le Pautre (1618–1682) framed engravings of Bacchanalian scenes.
These colourised prints date back to circa 1900 are later versions of 17th century designed by prolific French artist Jean Le Pautre.
Above is a reimagining of “Garden of Venus with Bacchus Squeezing Grapes” after Italian artist Giacinto Gimignani. The original characters have been replaced with cherubs.
Below is after the “Triumph of Bacchus” by Diego Velázquez and has the text ‘Invented and engraved by Jean Le Pautre’ along the bottom edge. Again, the characters are replaced with mythical putti in place of the human figures of the original.
Presented in modern ornate frames that are gilt over red with a green centre. A marble effect mount with red and gold embellishments draws on the colours from the imagery.

The prolific French artist encapsulated the Baroque Style. Producing over 1,500 etchings detailing friezes, vases, ceiling decorations, chimneypieces, and intricate garden grottos.
