This Handed Pair of Ornate Italian Sculptures After Michelangelo’s Night and Day are carved from a light pink buff terracotta.

Dating to the 19th century, these statues represent night and day, an allegory of the four sections of a day by Michelangelo which also includes Dawn and Dusk represented in similar forms. The original sculptures were carved in marble, situated in Sagrestia Nuova, also known as the New Sacristy and the Medici Chapel.

Day, depicted as a strong male figure, is draped with a flowing cloth. Its detailed face looks onward to the future and resembles a figure in the prime of life.

Night, depicted as a woman with her head facing downwards at the end of her life. She leans on a detailed, bearded mask and has a bird standing between her legs, which rest on a bushel of fruit.

Each figure is lay atop a large scroll, which pleasingly offset each other as a handed pair. The statues would be equally impressive on display indoors or atop a covered entry or garden walkway.
