About this piece
back to topAn early 20th century R.W Russell Carrara marble sundial made in 1915.
This unusual sundial is well weathered and has been later mounted on a modern base. The Carrara marble backing plate has carved indices with lead inlays and Roman numerals around the outside.
The gnomen resembles a flag, flying over a highly detailed bronze sundial. The bronze has numerous markings with various etchings and engravings that have a rich verdigris patina.
Engravings and quotes are still visible throughout. ‘Wongalee,’ ‘Greenwich Meantime,’ ‘Latitude Longditute 40 above sea level’ and the remainder of a quote that resembles ‘thou my slave when I smile rejoices I the master’ can be made out.
Below, the sundial has a cast bronze sculpture, topped with a crowned, bearded male face resembling Poseidon. The scrolling foliage blooming outwards resembles crashing waves which culminate in a row of tines which indicate the months and seasons on a separate panel.Â
A truly unique and striking garden feature that would suit indoors or outside.
