About this piece

An early 17th century oil painting of Saint Bartholomew after Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640).

This Italian school portrait on paper laid down on board dates to circa 1600. In the style of the religious paintings of Peter Paul Reubens (1577-1640) Saint Bartholomew is depicted with the dagger as many persecuted figures were shown with the instruments of their demise.

The very dark and sombre feel has a nod to Caravaggio and the tenebrism style of the era. Seemingly illuminated by flame, the darkness alludes to the secrecy and hidden nature of his faith. The deep red robes are layered in shadow with the glint of the sinister dagger, obscured by the frame contrasts the calm demeanour of the saint.
