About this piece
back to topA large-scale 19th century depiction of the Dancing Faun of Pompeii after the Roman period antique.
The original bronze statue on which this replica is based was uncovered in Pompeii in 1830, once the centrepiece of a Roman impluvium: a shallow pool at the centre of a home’s atrium used to collect rainwater through an opening in the roof. The great Pompeiian house in which the discovery resided was later proudly named ‘House of Faun’ after the characterful bronze, striking instant fame with its iconic design and expressive stance.
This Italian bronze captures the faun’s joyous image, his arms raised in the air and head tipped back as he dances, light on his feet. Dating from circa 1890, the bronze is in excellent condition and comes mounted on a shaped breccia marble base.
