About this piece
back to topAn elegant terracotta statue depicting the Roman goddess Venus in incredible detail. Clothed in sweeping linens, she holds an ornately decorated lute in a classical pose leaning against a column. It is a beautiful sculpture for interior or garden, it’s scale an elegant feature piece for an alcove or courtyard.
Stamped with the manufacturer’s mark, this Venus statue was made by Mandeville Pottery based in Castelnaudary (Aude) in the south of France, a famous company of its time. From 1880, the company evolved, using the name ‘Mandeville-Combeleran’ on it’s works. This was to be followed by ‘Mandeville-Bernier’ in 1905 until the company’s closure in 1935. For this reason, we can be confident that this Venus sculpture was made between 1880 and 1905 as it is stamped with the name ‘Mandeville-Combeleran’.
