About this piece

A large and impressive antique stained glass window depicting St John, the Evangelist, dating from circa 1860. In this stunning glasswork piece, the Saint is depicted in vibrant red drapery, a feathered quill in one hand – representing his role as author of the Gospel of John – and a chalice in the other from which emerges a small dragon.

According to legend, the dragon, sometimes also modelled as a serpent, symbolises the devil. As the story goes, John was asked to test the power of his faith by drinking from a poisoned cup. The Saint drank from the chalice and was unharmed.
