About this piece

An antique painted plaster portrait wall roundel of a female in profile by George Blackall Simonds (signed).

Finished in gold paint and fitted with a wall hook to the reverse, this decorative wall roundel is partially inscribed ‘Romae FEC AUG MDCC’ and indistinctly dated. A marble roundel of similar design by Simonds with signature and alike inscribed markings was sold at Abington Auction Gallery on 2nd September 2020, Lot 50.

We are confident that this painted plaster roundel dates before 1905 as it is signed ‘George Simonds’ and the sculptor only added Blackall to his name in 1905. The English sculptor worked and lived in Rome from 1864 to 1875.

Depicting a portrait profile of a female looking to the right with ribbons of curling hair and a frilled dress, this 150 year old artistic roundel will make an elegant decorative piece on an interior wall, it’s gold paint finish drawing the eye in homes old and new.
