back to topA large narrow antique medieval style window depicting Edward the Confessor, reclaimed from Goodmanham Chapel, East Yorkshire.
Though this stained glass window dates the late 19th century, it is in an earlier naïve post-medieval English style. It includes the text ‘Sanctus Edwardus’; the Latin name for Edward the Confessor, also referred to as St. Edward.
Edward ruled as Anglo-Saxon King of the English from 1042 until 1066. He was the last reigning monarch of the House of Wessex and died without an heir, his death initiating the famous 11th century Norman Conquest. He was later canonised as a Saint by Pope Alexander in 1161, appearing in this window with both a crown and a halo signifying his joint titles.
With its tall and narrow proportions, this religious stained glass window will make a stunning addition to a period property or renovated chapel home with its charming design and subtle colours.
