About this piece
back to topAn antique Italian Neoclassical walnut and oak carved fireplace, with complex and intricate detailing.
This 19th-century example stands proudly on two walnut footblocks. Two oak half column jambs bearing lions on intricate plaques are surrounded by drapes above and flora below. The tapered columns are topped with capitals carved in a composite style.
The walnut shelf and frieze section continue the flora and fauna themes. Finely carved putti look out from each corner of the mantle. More floral patterns weave into pairs of griffins facing inwards to blank shields. The whole piece is centred with an expertly carved lion’s head. Egg and dart moulding runs the length of the mantel, with delicate beading and vertical notches.
This surround combines multiple styles of the neoclassical period with huge amounts of detail.
