Resting Satyr

Known for its relaxed stance and tree trunk prop, the resting satyr has remained an iconic piece of Roman art.

The stoneware piece we currently house is a depiction of the original, showing the young satyr resting against a tree trunk in its elegant pose.

Also known as ‘The Faun of Praxiteles’, the original is thought to have been a marble statue by Praxiteles from around 340-330 BC, the satyr thought have been called ‘Periboëtos’ in Roman mythology. It now resides in the Capitoline Museums, in Rome, Italy.
