About this piece
back to topAn Antique Hand Carved Stone Sarcophagus.
This unusual yet charming architectural model has been carved from York Stone with exceptional attention to detail.
Standing on block feet with a heavy stepped base, each face of the block has a high relief carving.
The front face of the small structure bares the date ‘1684.’ To the right, ‘G T UDALE’ is carved in high relief. The opposing side has a pair of crossed pipes, possibly implying this is a tobacco box of sorts. The back face has a gothic trefoil.
The box is finished with a stepped lid, culminating with an acorn finial.
